SAFETY IS A TEAM EFFORT IN THE MASSIVE MURRAY PADDLE

Transport for NSW today announced a new partnership in support of the longest paddling race of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Massive Murray Paddle will see participants wind their way along the picturesque Murray River from Yarrawonga to Swan Hill, covering 404 kilometres in five days.

Transport for NSW spokesman Neil Patchett said supporting the iconic event was a great opportunity to promote the importance of paddle safety among kayak, canoe and stand-up paddle board users.

“To help people starting out in paddling, Transport for NSW has put together a free introductory online paddle safety course,” Mr Patchett, from Transport’s Centre for Maritime Safety, said.

“The paddle safety course is interactive and provides important safety advice on the right equipment, paddling techniques and boating rules.

“Paddlers aren’t required to pass a licence test or have any formal training, so we hope this course will give them the confidence, knowledge and skills to get out and have fun on the water while also staying safe.”

Massive Murray Paddle Managing Director Shannon O’Brien said Transport for NSW’s support will help spread the important paddle safety message.

“Paddle sports are growing in popularity with around 4000 new paddle craft sold across NSW each year,” Mr O’Brien said.

“Paddling is a great way to keep fit, is low cost and can be done with friends and family of all ages.”

Centre for Maritime Safety is leading the Transport for NSW partnership which includes on-water, operational support from Roads and Maritime Services.

The free Paddle Sport safety course was developed for the Australia and New Zealand Safe Boating Education Group with support from Transport for NSW and can be accessed at www.boaterexam.com/paddling/au-nz/

The Massive Murray Paddle will be held from 21-25 November 2016. More information can be found at www.massivemurraypaddle.org.au
