A Q for the shark fisherman

Recommended Posts

Im seriously thinking of having a crack at sharks this season of Broken Bay.  A couple of the many questions I have is for those that fish over the shelf for sharks.  Is there a prefered depth or is it manily dependent on your burley, and the second Q, do you guys turn your engine off, or do you keep it running all day considering how far off shore you are.  Thanks in advance.

For those old enough to remember and not politically correct paranoid,.. If fishing with Bob Dyer 2-3 dogs an hour.

I thought this kind of bait is/was popular only in Africa.

Was it quite common in Australia as well?

until gamefish aust banned the use of mammal flesh or blood many years ago...I fished out of lake mac for many years chasing bities..we used a mix of chicken mince ..fish mince..fish frames chunks or thrown out pieces of chicken from chook farm....some guys prefer mullet or salmon put thru berley pot..we used mince in bags as its quieter..we fished one bait weighted nearly on bottom and two baits on floats in slick..everyone does things differently...I have since gone to the gentlemanly art of marlin fishing...bahahaha

You dont have to go to far to shark fish. You could sit in the middle of broken bay heads to catch them.                             This time of year you will get pups inshore, mainly makos threshers and hammers usually between 10-40kg. The bigger females generally give birth after the gemfish season.                                      Burley wise, much the same as rick said, just make sure its constant. You can have them at the boat in 5 min or 5 hrs lol. Beer comes in handy.                      As for numbers of rods out we run 2 both on ballons. One set closer to the boat the other set up to 50-100M back.    And you are not a true shark fisherman if you dont swim to the closet balloon and back after 2 hrs lol
