Fish ID please (BARRACOUTA)

Is this a gem fish? Caught in 110 meters today. Its about 94cm

well, at least its been narrowed down a bit

 

It was brightly coloured when it came out, but faded in the esky.

That line that goes down the flanks seems to be a signature

and that is what mine has. I wondered if it a coutta when it came out

but the guy I was with said it wasn't. Certainly, we were both a bit wary

getting the hook out, the teeth looked a bit interesting.

definitely a barracouta ..gemmies are a lot heavier build as you can see from the foto...you normally wont catch gemmies in less than 350 mtrs of water

It can be eaten, but the fillets are rather bony, and there are much better eating fish about.

Have tried smoking them in a shoe box size smoker, better than cooking any other way.

Yes the old pick handle (Barracouta), can be wormy too the Victorians love them I cant come at them though.

I reckon you can smell them when they are still 20 M under the boat- stinky , bony things- good mako bait though
