Wellzy94
Headed down to Nepean Rowing Club yesterday after work, to see if I could get a few mullet for a bottom bashing trip in a few weeks. They've certainly started to head back out to the salt, as there wasn't much activity going on. Berleyed out and rigged up, and not even a touch for about an hour. Then a solid bump and hooked up to a nice 35cm mullet, straight in the esky. No more mullet, and the only other interest was from a good sized herring, that was sent back on its way. Estimated 22-23cm, but a bit skinny. No pics as it was dark and I didn't have a headlamp with me. Going to need to start buying bait again soon! Wellzy94
I use my Wilson 10'6" blackfish rod, paired with a Sienna 1000 spooled with 6lb braid. Fixed float, and a single hook about 30cm under the float. Cheers, Wellzy
Rah
Nice work mate. Not something I have ever targeted.

I have great memories of float fishing even though it was eons ago. Concentration and anticipation personified. Cheers Wellzy, Neil.
Wellzy94
I use fluorocarbon mate, it's less visible in water than mono. If I have time I make dough, and tease cotton wool through it so it holds together longer. Cheers, Wellzy
HenryR
Wellzy, bull mullet? Are they a regular thing up there?
Wellzy94
They're common in the warmer months. Always good to have a spot 10 minutes away to have some fun with them, and it's pretty easy to stock up on bait too Cheers, Wellzy
HenryR
Wellzy, I haven't logged in for a while - belated thanks for the reply. And, I think good news. I have a fondness for bull mullet. Haven't caught any for years but used to catch them as a kid. When they'll bite, they fight hard ! They've been one of the things on my to do list since I started fishing again. Might have to head west come summer.
frankS
Used to love fishing the Liverpool weir as a kid and growing up in my teen years, used the lightest longest rod I could get back in them days ( 60's ) quill float and 3-4/0 treble hook, we called them jag hooks back then, used doe with cotton wool and kneaded the doe above the barbs on the shank of the hook, we didn't keep a fish unless it was hooked bottom and top lips. Brings back some wonderful memories. Frank

parky3149
What species of fish can you target with freshwater mullet? I enjoy catching mullet but haven't really considered using them as bait. I assume you could use them for jewies/flathead similar to the mullet you catch in saltwater? Wellzy94
Yeah mate. Chunks of mullet fillets also work pretty well for flathead, and I put the frames into crab traps too. Cheers, Wellzy
