Protecting cork rod grips/butt

Hi guys!

Hoping someone might be able to give me some advice on protecting the butt and grips of my new baby against chips/scrapes on the cork.

I remember someone once mentioning a kind of wax that you could coat the cork in to protect it from damage. Does anyone know about this?

Thanks guys!

I was looking into this a while back to protect my more expensive rods with cork grips. And i think U40 cork seal is what you are after.

I havnt tried the product as i ended up just replacing the seats and grips to my own personal taste.

and also iv tried dying cork black  did not turn out so well at all!

Hi Mike;

First thing to do is give the grips a wipe over using  fine steel wool and metho to clean them.

I then use a boot waterproofing paste called "Boot Goo'.

It is basically beeswax.

Put the rods out in the sun to warm the cork and apply a light coat,

Let this soak in and apply another couple of coats.

Leave in the sun between coats so it will soak in.

If you want to risk a trip to the dog house use the Bosses hairdryer!

Wipe any surplus off with a paper towel and that is it.

This will last a couple of seasons,

Just wipe them over with a damp cloth after using them.

Has worked a treat for me for years.

Cheers.

Roger.
