MainframeJames Posted November 16, 2017 Share Posted November 16, 2017 I could be wrong (it's more common than I would prefer) but I think Boobooks and Tawnies are different birds. Booboks are owls but Tawnies aren't, they just look a lot like owls. In Rick's pic you can see the very Ruddy brown colouring, the raptor bill and around the eyes large grey patches. In Paddy's pic you can see the colouring is very grey. Referencing other pics you can see the Tawnies have a very large "frog mouth" and the dark patches on their eyes are distinct horizontal bars. I think Mopoke is a nickname originally given to Booboks because that's what they sound like (that's where Boobook comes from too). The confusion comes in because for a distance they're almost an identical size and shape, and the colouring is close enough to be tough to gauge without a side-by-side comparison.
