Squid Info

Hi All

Caught my first squid the other day ,wanted to keep it alive for bait however once i put it in the bucket it died with ink all over the place . So my question Can a squid ink itself to death and how do we keep em alive ? My dead squid was  in a bucket half filled with water

Maybe try an aerator, if they are like bait fish the need that to keep alive.

 

I use a little battery operated aerator & it works for yakka's etc.

to keep the squid alive you need an aerator and change the water atleast every time it inks

Maybe have them in a keeper net off the side of the jetty or boat where your fishing. Might work( not sure).

The ink will suffocate the squid so best to change water. Depending on how much water determines aerator or not. I’ve had them survive a until use without aerator but also I’ve changed water

+ one to aerator but you will need to change water that has been inked. That's why i use a keeper net. Issue is when the sharks come calling....I've had nets taken and ripped apart

I find they are hard to keep alive without proper tank.  I keep most alive on boat ok in a 60 litre bait tank but change water frequently and keep pump going to change water when they ink up the water.  Strangely I have known the greedy little buggers to feed after settling down and will help themselves to other livies in tank.   Ron

You can't leave them in the water with all that ink and goop, it takes a while even with my 500 rule pump to clear the water and if you have a few in the tank they often ink at each other.

yes they constantly need fresh water to survive

you can buy wire mesh cages from tackle stores or kmart  hang these in water it flows thru and they will live for ages...some have a float in the lid and they collapse flat for carryin..rick
