Overhead outfit advice

Hi Raiders,

Contemplating getting an overhead combo to chase larger fish was wondering if you would load mono or braid? Looking at something like the penn GT330 as its just in my budget.

Braid with about 10 meter wind on mono leader works well. Can use it for both game fish or deep drop.

Shimano Tld  has got a good reputation as an entry level reel. Ebay with 10 % discount at the moment is about $130.

What is the actual budget?

I have the reel you are talking about but it is an older model when they were made in the USA & is a much better quality than the current China made version.

Its an easy thing to buy a combo but I think your better off spending more on a quality reel that will last a lifetime & pair it with a half decent cheap rod like .

It depends a lot on the style of fishing with respect to the braid or mono question. Deep water bottom bashing is where braid shines but in other applications mono might be a better choice. If using braid I will go for a reel with a level wind as it is easier on your fingers and there is less chance of getting bait on your line and inviting leatherjackets to bite through it. This can happen a lot and can get a bit expensive. A good alternative is one of the low stretch lines mono such as the one Platypus makes. It has some braid like characteristics (easier to feel bites), but the leatherjackets will leave it alone.

I mostly troll lures with my overhead outfits and like to use mono and I always use Platypus Pretest , which breaks within the selected line class (important in ANSA & IGFA competition). That stretch gives you a bit of leeway, i.e. it’s forgiving and can mean the difference at the strike stage when trolling, especially with a novice angler on the rod. My light reel is a Shimano TLD Charter Special spooled with 6kg. Site sponsor Dinga had it on special a while back for $139. Great value, tough and the level wind spreads the line evenly - my wife and son struggle with a normal overhead to spread line. My 15kg outfit is a Shimano Tyrnos 30 2 speed on a rod I built myself on a Butterworth JS980X blank. This rod has served me well for over 35 years. The reel is new last season. I also have a Shimano Tyrnos 20 2 speed I haven’t used yet but I couldn’t resist the price - got it for $250 new in box on a local Facebook buy and sell page. Last I looked you can get them for $349 at Dinga. Hard to beat Dinga’s prices! If you can’t decide on the rod, at least buy the reel you want from Dinga then take it to your local tackle specialist store and have them suggest a rod, clamp it on and see how it feels.
