Hey guys so next year I am going to the coral see for a 9 day charter we will be jigging for dog tooth tuna so I have never gone jigging before, I'm wondering if anybody that has any advise on gear I need to buy  rods and reels and jigs, I'm thinking of getting the daiwa dogfight 8000h and pairing it with a jigging rod this is what confuses me abit there are so many and I haven't done this type of fishing before, I have high quality gear but it's all landbased gear! I'd rather by a quality rod that i can keep for many more trips ahead! I love the idea of over head reel for jigging but I have never used one and don't want unwanted headaches on the charter from me not knowing what I'm doing with one hahha so I'm hoping some can share abit of advice  appreciate the help guys

Overheads are only tricky if you are casting. In saying that, I started using baitcasters for the first time this year for plastics and vibes and have adapted pretty easily to them. They are not as tricky as they  are made out to be.

Spinning reels are also very effective When jigging for Pelagics it is pretty much all in the rod and the action. I imagine Mackerals are like kings. Pump pump pump thump!!

Don’t see why you need overhead for that. I would get the jigging rod and use a good spinning reel you can keep using for land based.

I recently sold my overhead JM gear to a guy who specialised in dogtooth tuna. Firstly most of these fish are targeted from straight up down jigging not casting, secondly most serious heavy jiggers believe the overhead outfit has more sheer pulling power on these bigger fish. Then there's gear ratios, where the overhead specialised jigging reels have very low ratios which are ideal for cranking stubborn fish up. In saying that both can do the job and the spin allows popping for big GT's etc too.

Go big is all I can say lol.

And hang on for your life, these fish are the gangsters of the ocean imo!

A pe10 jig rod will be right at home.

Also beef up your jigs, they can bite through Kevlar cord assists lol.

I wish you the best of luck lol, hooking them isn’t hard lol, stopping them from reefing you is and if you manage to stop him hitting the reef then hope the sharks don’t get it, then hope the hooks don’t pull, then hope he doesn’t bite through assists lol.

The odds are against you mate haha.

i reckon if you land 1 in 10 your doing well, I’ve only chased them in Vanuatu but I’m assuming we will have the same issues here.

Still gives me nightmares haha!

Also Stella is your best bet I reckon.
