Good deals on a fly reel?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at getting into fly fishing, but it is turning out to be so damn expensive. I found a nice used 6 weight rod for use mostly on bream and bass, but now I'm struggling to fit a reel and line into my budget. Anyone know of any stores that are offering good deals on fly reels at the moment, maybe buy a reel and they toss in line or a clearance sale or something? I really don't want to cheap out and get something crappy that turns me off fly fishing, but I also don't want to spend a fortune. Cheers

Compleat tackle chain had some flyfishing sale recently -  if you want something brand new,  and they are not cheap.

Cheers, I'll check it out. I was looking to buy used originally, but haven't been able to find the right reel for me yet and I'm getting a bit impatient.

Mate, this might be a long shot.....but try emailing Steve Williamson. Steve is one of the most respected and longest serving Fishing guides (Fly Fishing a speciality) in Australia. He is based in Jindabyne and even though he recently sold his tackle shop there, I know he used to periodically sell off a lot of his used fly fishing gear.

Give him a try, it cant hurt!

Email is ..............sales@swtroutfishing.com.au

Cheers

Mate,

For bream and bass you don't need anything expensive. You will fight them with your palm./fingers./hand. Seriously don't go over board as most of the time you won't even get to backing for those species. Fly lines you are going to get stung though....summer time was a floating for bass and for bream an intermediate...

Hi Aardvarking.

You will notice differences in rods and gear. I own both a 7 weight (for freshwater) and 9 weight rod (for saltwater) made by the NZ company Composite developments which suit me. The 7 weight came with a reel and I picked up some reels made by Scientific Anglers for the 9 weight. One of my friends got a rod about a year ago and the difference is chalk and cheese.

Can you go out with someone that has some gear? If you are in the lower North Shore we can take mine out for a play in a local field or sand flat and you can get a feel for the gear. PM me if interested. I in no way consider myself to be an expert but I can use the gear and have caught fish on them.

On a side note - the reel is mostly a line holding system for the freshwater. As @rippinlips pointed out you will fight them by hand. Drag comes in to play a bit more when fighting the pelagics.

Regards,

Derek

Hey mate,

Not sure if you're still looking but I would stick with second hand if you're just getting into it. As others have said, fly reels are mostly about holding line unless you're going tropical and chasing monsters on the flats.

Been using basic trout gear in the salt, just need to make sure you give everything a good rinse afterwards.

There's a forum specialising in Australian salt water fly fishing which often has good deals on barely used rods/reels/line. I'm actually thinking of trying a cheapish Chinese reel from Ali Express if you're happy to wait a couple of weeks for shipping. They're getting a pretty good wrap for the price ($30-$60 shipped).

Also a great place to get cheap fly tying materials if that's on your radar (just don't skimp on the hooks).
