Port Hacking

Yowie

Recommended Posts

Headed up river early this morning and anchored near the mouth of Yowie Bay. The wind was a bit swirly, so the boat was moving about during the stronger gusts.

Some reddies about, but most nowhere near size, especially the ones feeding amongst the jackets, a lot around the 10cm mark. The water had a slight bit of colour in it after the rain, was thinking there might a bigger reddie on the bite but none there. Quite a few small jackets as well that were released.

Only one decent hit during the morning, and it was the big flattie, a squid strip on a handline. Put up a good fight, thought it was a jewie at first with the head shakes and strong runs it made. Weighed in at 10 pound 4 ounces - my second 10 pounder up Port Hacking this year. Photo and released.

Was hoping to catch something else, so I headed to the mouth of the Hacking and drifted the deeper water. Pulled out the tailor and 2 flatties, one of which is a dusky, caught in 60 or so feet of water. Also some little blue spots less than 30cm. The wind was puffing through the mouth during the drift. Enough for a feed so headed home.

Very nice flattie you got there and very nice catches in general. All in all, good report and a good feed ready for the table!

Thank you. Having a feed tonight.

Very nice Flatty and a good feed with the others.

Thank you. The big girl was only lip hooked, easy to set free.

Great work Yowie!

Those jackets will make a nice feed and the 10lb flattie great bonus.

Cheers

Jim

Mum likes the jackets as well, so she will be having a nice feed also.

Very nice flattie yowie and a good feed as always.

The big girl put up a good fight, big head shakes and some power. Ate a few of the jackets tonight, a few bones but nice flavour.

Nice work yowie! That’s a cracking flatty. And a good feed as well. Fishing hasn’t seemed to have slowed down that much yet!

Cheers scratchie!!!

2 x 10 pound flatties in the one year, happy with that.

Slowing down a bit down this way. Hooking up the caravan next week and heading to southern Qld, probably not much fishing happening up there. Good luck to the locals fishing down here.

Go the Blues on Wednesday night. :D

You always manage a nice platter Yowie and congrats on the cracker croc, very healthy looking fish and released to terrorise baitfish in the spring!

Thanks Rob, it was a solid fish. Not expecting to catch one like that at this time of year. The baitfish schools appear to very scattered, however, there are many small reddies about so some of them won't be growing much bigger, the last thing they will see is a big mouth closing around them.

Death, taxes and Yowie catching fish...

Top stuff getting a decent feed out of the river this time of year.

Rich

Thanks Rich. The jackets are not big, but were very tasty for a change, flathead and tailor fillets tonight.

Great flattie, would have been fun on the hand line!

Thank you. It put up a good fight, powering away left and right then under the boat.

Who needs carbon n braid when you can have a handline

Exactly correct. Try a kingfish or an eagle ray or a bigger jewie on a handline. It is not fun until your fingers start burning from the speed of the line as the fish takes off.  :074: I have suffered small burn marks on a finger and thumb from the line as a result of the above critters.

The locals in the Northern Territory still fish for barra with a handline, though heavier than the 12 or 15 pound lines I use.
