Electric Motor Batteries

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Just have picked up my new boat with a Minn Kota.

It has a single 100 A/h battery.

I am looking at recharging the independent battery used for the Minn Kota off a suitable regulator connected to the main batteries or using a separate charger.

I welcome any suggestions that will help in my choice..

Thanks in advance..

Sounds like you just need something as simple a VSR isolator.

Not sure if the systems on boats are any different to what people use on their 4X4's though??

Pretty sure they are the same thing!

If you wanted to spend a bit more money then you could go with something  like this where you can use the electric motor battery to start the boat if required.

If there is room where your boat battery is I would put the other one directly beside it & run a cable up to the Minn Kota, this means the 2nd battery will charge quicker as you wont lose as many volt if the battery is further away.

Personally I would want to be able to use the 2nd battery as a back up to start the boat if it somehow ran flat while your out on the water.

Not sure Id be fitting solar panels to a boat, unless you are spending multiple days at anchor or consuming  hell of a lot of power on electronics while at anchor.

If anything up the 2nd AGM battery amp hours.

Still if one wanted to having a set up with an Anderson plug available wouldn't hurt.

You could have a solar blanket you could fold out then need be!

Not sure how a solar panel would stand up to the seas or the salt air??
