Compact fly options.

G’day guys.

Looking for a compact fly set up... Something I can put easily in a back pack for a hike in option, or on the motorbike.

I like to travel to the lesser popular locations on the bike and I am interested in potentially running a small fly rig with my hunting set up to vary my days in the bush.

Targeting trout in the streams mainly.

Im not a fly fisho yet so if a budget option is available I am happy with that!

 Cheers!

Hi Paddy,

What is the budget? Compact these days is not really an issue. Many rods come as a 4 piece and even my 9 foot long rod packs down into an easy carry small tube with a sling.

For the small streams I expect a 5 weight is a good option. I'd suggest approaching this slightly differently and looking at a saltwater (stainless guides and runners) which means you can use it for both salt and freshwater.

If you go 7 weight it can be used for larger trout, carp, bass and then several of the saltwater species.

Regards,

Derek

8 piece  here ;) :

I think you win @savit....

I looked for a 9 and 10 piece to top you but I think the only way of achieving that is to snap a few of the pieces...

Looks like 10 piece rods actually exist. 1st one is still for sale.

Sorry, I dont get why you would have an 8 or 10pc rod when you can just get a decent telescopic??

Way less hassle imo & you cant lose 1 of 8 or 10 pieces 😉 🤐

Most of 8 and 10 piece fly rods are vintage from pre-tele era i.e  no particular choice dilemma. Tele rod action and rod rating aside, the only environment I would avoid for tele rods - is probably beaches due to sand regularly getting stuck inside.

Personally, in this case, considering that Paddy93 already using/carrying a  hunting setup, I would just measure it  and go from its dimensions rather than chasing something superportable with questionable quality.  Assuming it is a hunting rifle - over 3 feet - then even 3 piece fly rod should suffice without sticking out.

Probably wouldn't but I know @savit in person and I think he has a wonderfully understated sense of humour at times and I think both of us were starting to see how far we could take it (from the practical, to the silly, to the absurd). Now if I can find a 11 or 12 piece fly rod I might have a chance. :mfr_lol:

The original poster hasn't logged on for about a month so they might not even see this.

Gday paddy, it would be good to know a price point as you can get compact fly rods from a couple hundred up to a few thousand dollars - obviously you pay for quality

The OP cant have been to interested as its been 2 months since he's been here & hasnt responded to his own thread
