2004 Yamaha 70hp 2 stroke not pumping water on earmuffs

Hi Guys,

 

As the title suggests, water just dribbling very slowly out the tell tail. 

Do you normally get a decent jet at idle on these motors without the need for any thermostat to open when cold started?

I am next going to pull the tell tail pipe off to check for blockage.

 

ps. getting water out the back of the engine at the little vent above gearbox.

Does it pump normally in the water (not on the muffs) it's pretty common for cheap muffs to leak badly, causing low water pressure. How long has it been since the water pump was done? if you decide to do the pump, spend the money on a genuine kit, not an after market impeller on its own, but a full kit, genuine brand.

Yes you should get a decent flow from the tell tale

Could be tell tale hose blockage but could also be that your impeller is buggered to.

Definately a process of elimination.

A friend had a similar problem but the motor had sand go through the intake & we tried to do a reverse flush.

It helped............for a while but in the end had to remove the foot & look at the water pump which was still full of sand. Ended up having to replace the water pump.

Haven't had it in the water yet, just bought it.

Seller said pump, impellor, head gasket done 12 months ago.

Yep thanks, watched that and most of this blokes videos, good stuff.

Will check the pipe.

For peace of mind just replace the complete impeller unit with a genuine item. Where the thermostats replaced these can also cause problems if faulty,cheap insurance.

mate they have a really small telltale pipe .get abit of wippersnipper wire and poke it up telltale while running the engine on  the muffs  should clear the diameter is so small a few salt granuals can block it. cheers dunc333

Thanks, yeah if the pipe isn't blocked I'll just do that.

ok good ,then do waterpump thermo and if still blocked you have to pull off the head and clean the water galleries

Get a complete pump kit, the housing and wear plate can cause grief and should be replaced now and then, and just one other hint, never believe what a seller says unless it is documented and verifiable.
