Hi All,

I bought a chinese VHF portable handset. It comes without channels pre-configured, but its easy enough to do with opensource software called CHIRP.

I have found a list of channels here https://www.acma.gov.au/vhf-maritime-mobile-band-channel-allocations

But I am thinking I only really need a few of those.

Which ones are essential (besides 16)  ?

Don’t forget you need a license to operate a VHF radio. This is a required safety device, it may save your life. Don’t skimp out too late when you need it. Channels 16-67 distress and calling there are several working channels required for communication and repeater channels best off having all A’s per acma requirements

It is important to get your license for VHF as you are on commercial channels and don't want idiots  interfering with their work channels.

You need the Long Range operators certificate of Proficiency from Australian Maritime College Tasmania. I run Marine rescue courses. As to the second channel, it all depends where you are. 72, 73 etc. You should contact the nearest Marine Rescue unit to where you fish. They will tell you.

@JimC would that be the MROCP? We used to run that for fishraiders and had invigilators.
