jenno64 Posted January 10, 2021 Share Posted January 10, 2021 Gathered some good sized poddies on Friday before heading out early in the bay on Saturday morning. Poor man's downrigged the poddies in the hope of a king amongst a carpark of boats early on then headed up river to a couple of reliable spots. Didn't do much good losing half poddies to tailor but just as the tide started running hard, first drift in a deep water spot had my rod bent over and a very feisty flathead came on board just short of 80 cm. A couple of pics and released in good form. Headed further up river to a a couple of spots with no action so back to another haunt nearing the bottom of the tide and a screaming first run saw a very fat fish come aboard, this one also in the high 70s. As I was close to shore I took some landbased shots and revived her to swim off back to the bait! One more drift and on board cam a 50cm model that went onto ice for a meal. I don't specifically target the big flatties, but sometimes the silly bastards grab my baits in the deeper waters. 🤣 Biggest at 88cms so far. An old fishing mate (gone for some years now) used to fish along the main channels, Gunnamatta, Burraneer Bays, along the main channel near the Ballast Heap. His best was 12 pound, and he said he dropped one beside the boat, about 15 pound and 1 metre, spat the hook. He targeted the big ones during late spring, summer, early autumn.
