Even more fundamentaly-what exactly are they clamping down on? An idealogical position?

Not saying this will be the case, but like other attempts to "positively change" our sport, another sneaky attempt to get something through with minimal publicity.

Bait shops who sell live bait such as nippers, worms and prawns would be greatly affected, as would those who use live squid, fish or crabs. 

It's only a possibility, but everyone needs to be aware of the proposal

Yes, it is. Just not as farmers suicides level in rural Australia due to lack of support. Each party has its own priorities.

The methodology is divide and conquer-Tunastrike if you think "factory" farming is cruel-why do you fish- at the end of the day cruelty is an abstract idea-and the AJP and their ilk want all forms of animal exploitation ended and will stop at any means. In Vic they have forced restrictions on duck hunting and support "let the foxes run free", here its the current legislation , soon it will be further restrictions on farmers, hunters fishos-and sorry mate if you are anti any of these then you will contribute to the downfall of fishing one day-every one of these activities ends in the death of an animal-none is funadamentely different. When the AJP appeared on the scene one of my staff (young 20 something) loudly proclaimed she was voting for them-after a 20 minute chat she told me the Monday after the election that she put them last-the chat consisted of me showing her how their agenda included veganism (she liked a steak), banning horseracing (she earnt a few extra dollars doing track work), banning pets (she owned dogs,cats and a horse)- dont be fooled by these clowns, they are a genuine threat to our pastimes and ways of life.

Animal cruelty does not stop on farm animals - just check a petfood section at any big supermarket or specialised store as an example. Do you want to make your dog or cat vegetarian or vegan too to match your lifestyle - easy and legal! What is their actual choice - eat or die! Industry does not give a duck that it is against what cats and dogs were eating for thousands of generations and what sicknesses it may lead to - as long as it brings more money. And according to 3-pages 2-columns AJP policy on companion animals - it does not bother vegan  "friends of nature" too. 

Also, most of mentioned Swiss fishing is in alpine waters, and is quite comparable to NSW alpine freshwater fishing regulations i.e. it is nothing like Sydney Harbour, coast or offshore fishing. Local fishing restrictions is only issue for fresh expats there. 30min-1.1/2hr drive to another spot across most of borders, and your fishing problem with live bait or C&R is solved.
