Fisheries Officers crack down on illegal fishing during the COVID-19 lockdown

Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Fisheries Officers are cracking down on illegal fishing during the COVID-19 lockdown, after tips were received from the public through the Fishers Watch Phoneline.

NSW Police assisted DPI Fisheries who attended Fingal Island sanctuary zone, part of  Port Stephens - Great Lakes Marine Park on Saturday July 3. There they found that four people had travelled from Sydney to fish at that location in breach of COVID-19 regulations that were put in place by NSW Health. Three of them were also interviewed by fisheries officers regarding the harming or attempting to harm fish and, were in possession of fishing equipment in a sanctuary zone of the marine park. Following these interviews, the officers seized their fishing equipment (rods, reels and catch bags), together with their catch that had been unlawfully taken.

Both the COVID-19 and sanctuary zone breaches are serious offences and significant penalties apply, with a number of infringement notices to be issued to each of the offenders. Only 3 of the people were found to be fishing in the sanctuary zone and each will receive $1000 in fines relating to the fisheries offences.

All four of the group will receive $1000 fines from NSW Police Port Stephens Marine Area Command for their breach of COVID-19 Public Health Orders.

The public are encouraged to report illegal fishing activity to the NSW Fishers Hotline on 1800 043 536 or via the online Report Illegal Activity Form https://fal.cn/3gJWh

That is a frightening report for my region. I’ve heard of many instances where people have been turned away from restaurants and cafes etc as they have travelled up for the week or weekend from lockdown areas. As for fishing in a sanctuary zone, no excuse! You get caught, it will be a costly experience. There are plenty of areas to fish up here without fishing the pink zones!

cheers scratchie!!!

Arrests will happen for anyone trying that again

I think (and hope) the Police presence will bit somewhat higher and less tolerant if this planned 'protest' goes ahead.

$1000 fines are a pittance considering the seriousness of these breaches, especially the COVID related one.

If they're going to "throw the book at them", they need a bigger book.

That's just for leaving Sydney & traveling more than 10km outside there LGA.

Then they got fined $1000 for fishing in a sanctuary.

Expensive life lesson but if the on the spot fine is all they got then they were lucky!

Penalties for breaching public health orders

Breach of orders made under the Public Health Act 2010 is a criminal offence and attracts heavy penalties.

In the case of an individual, the maximum penalty is $11,000, or imprisonment for 6 months, or both and a further $5500 penalty may apply for each day the offence continues.

The NSW Police may also issue on-the-spot fines to individuals of

  • $1,000 for breach of a public health order
  • $200 for failure to comply with a direction to wear a mask.

Covid-19 public health orders apply to everyone!

Officials may even be looking at even our fishing reports here. Administration is bound by law to make any information available to law enforcement agencies on request.

Please make sure if you do make a fishing report that you start by mentioning that you are complying with the 10 km LGA limit.

I know raiders always do the right thing and we need to keep ourselves in check.

Fishing freely will be great and let's hope we can see tons of posts from us all in Fishing Reports :1clap:

This rent a crowd who organise these protests should be locked up.

Bring out the Water Cannon the Police gave to the Fire Brigade.

Some of these people haven't had a bath in a month, well it is about time.

Cheers.

Here is the problem, all these conspiracy theorists who refuse to get vaccinated or wear masks, stay at home and stage illegal gatherings and marches, when they catch the virus and inevitably spread it and potentially lead to the death of some people and also extend this lockdown which affects everyone. These irresponsible fools will expect to be treated in taxpayer funded Government hospitals, and claim welfare payments for a virus they believe is fake or inconveniences their liberty.

People who do not get vaccinated or adhere to the lockdown rules should not be treated in public hospitals.

I’ve never had a flu shot and at the present time will not be getting either vaccine. Just a personal choice ( and no I’m not an anti vaxxer)

Emphasis in quote added by me.

The thing is, it's not a personal choice.  Covid is that virulent, and that potentially harmful that getting vaccinated is as much a social responsibility as it is a personal choice.  We need everybody who can be vaccinated to be vaccinated in order to deny the virus the chance to spread.

The whole world is judging anti vaxxers

Unvaccinated people will end up living in a world full of restrictions. Restricted travel options, limited job choices or job opportunities. Theatres, concerts will not allow the unvaccinated.

Australia already will not give childcare fee assistance payments to parents of unvaccinated children.

Not many people want unvaccinated staff looking after their elderly loved ones or their children.

The key message we all need to heed right now is to get vaccinated asap. A vaccinated global population is a whole lot safer than those that are not vaccinated.

Thanks for the comments raiders. I am closing this thread now.

There are plenty of social media online places to discuss vaccination views.

Let’s keep Fishraider for fishing.
