Blade
Hi All, I want to top up the power trim fluid on my motor. I have tried to remove the plastic nut but it is seized. I have tried using a large screwdriver, a 19mm socket, a 4mm thick piece of aluminum flat bar to get more leverage. It wont move a mm and is breaking up. Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to remove it. See picutre below, the units have been sprayed with fish oil to prevent them from rusting which has worked well but may be part of the reason the filler nut has seized. frankS
First up make sure it isn't a left hand thread. Impact driver might get it started, other than that it's just spray wd40 give a few taps with hammer spray more wd40. Sorry that's the best I can do for now, not having access to the job. slowjigger
A penetrant fluid would be better than WD40 (though WD40 make one). Apply it over a few days. You have to be very careful you don't damage the nut. Make sure the screwdriver is of the optimal size.

Fab1
No brainer for me would be drilling and tapping it out and fitting a new staino bolt. If you go that way apply grease to drill and tap to collect plastic shavings.
Smobaby
Get some good quality vise grips securely tighten and undo. Then replace the plastic bolt with another genuine item if you destroyed it. There plastic for a reason..
Hoods
My merc has a plastic nut too. The rest of the unit is pretty light metal. Would not like to hit it with force. Heat won't work. Penetrating fluid will take ages and the plastic will get harder to work with. I would favour drilling it out & replacing with a new one - obviously some oil/grease when reinstating. Biggest concern is getting some of it in the system - or getting it out if it falls in. I think mine has a drain - that would be useful.
dunc333
all good options if the vice grips are slipping try cutting the plastic hex again with a angle grinder for more grip and she will come. drilling last option for me
